CINEMATOGRAPHY 2 (required: Cinematography 1 or equivalent)

  • Intensive advanced workshop in cinematography--comprised of lectures, presentations, hands-on exercises, in-group assignments, it covers: 

  1. Cinematography and the role of the cinematographer: - the artistic and technological elements of cinematography - how a cinematographer creates the "look" of the film - how a cinematographer changes the mood of the film 

  2. Cinematography during pre-production - collabortating with the director - previsualisation: finding the visual style of the film - planning the lighting situations to achieve a certain 'look' - selecting and testing film stock & filters - identifying equipment needs
  3. Cinematography during production - positioning the camera - composing the shot - setting up the lights 
  4. Cinematography during post-production - using special processing - communicating with the lab - communicating with the timer/grader 
  • advanced hands-on lighting exercises:

    • lighting a night interior-exterior scene  

    • lighting a daylight interior-exterior scene  

    • lighting or comedy, drama, horror

  • screening & lecture-presentation

  • a scene-by-scene analysis of a film – how the art, craft, and technological elements of cinematography tell the story, create the mood of the film, and help the actor deliver her character 

  • development of the visual style for the character-driven dialogue film project
